Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched PRARAMBH 2026, a nationwide awareness campaign to help citizens understand the upcoming Income Tax Act, 2025, which will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
The campaign is a major outreach effort by the Income Tax Department, using a mix of print, television, radio, digital media, and on-ground events. Its goal is simple: make income tax rules easier to understand and encourage people to comply without confusion.
What is PRARAMBH 2026?
PRARAMBH stands for Policy Reform and Responsible Action for Mission Viksit Bharat. It focuses on:
- Explaining the new tax law in simple language
- Providing guides, videos, FAQs, and brochures
- Engaging citizens through quizzes and workshops
- Reaching people in multiple languages across India
More than 300 workshops are planned across the country, along with interactive digital campaigns.
A Simpler, More Trust-Based Tax System
Speaking at the event, Sitharaman highlighted that the new Income Tax Act is designed to:
- Reduce confusion and legal disputes
- Improve voluntary compliance
- Build trust between taxpayers and the government
She also emphasized that tax officers should adopt to a more empathetic and citizen-friendly approach, using technology to reduce unnecessary human interaction while still maintaining a human touch.
Moreover, as part of the reforms, the government also introduced:
- Income Tax Website 2.0 with simpler navigation and better user experience.
- ‘Kar Saathi’ AI chatbot to help taxpayers get instant answers to their queries.
These step are part of a broader push toward digital transformation and easier access to tax services.
A Big Shift in India’s Tax System
In a significant move, both direct and indirect tax systems are being improved at the same time. Officials say this reflects a shift toward a more citizen-centric and transparent system.
Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava described the new law as a “clear and user-friendly” system, supported by better-trained officers and improved communication tools.
CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal added that the campaign is guided by the idea of “Nagrik Devo Bhava,” putting citizen first.
Sitharaman also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a human-centric digital future through M.A.N.A.V. framework, which promotes ethical, inclusive, and accountable use of technology.
Looking Ahead
The Finance Minister stressed that the success of the new law will depend on how well it is implemented. She cautioned against making frequent changes in the future and called for keeping the system stable, simple, and easy to understand.
With PRARAMBH 2026, the government aims to create a tax system where paying taxes becomes a natural choice, driven by clarity, ease, and trust rather than fear or confusion.
