Why Are ITR Refunds Delayed? Key Reasons Taxpayers Are Still Waiting

In India, income tax refund delays have become a major headache for taxpayers this assessment year, as many individuals are experiencing long waits after filing their tax returns on time & completing e-verification without any problems.

Social media is buzzing with complaints about refunds stuck at the processing stage. Grievance portals are also flooded, indicating how slowly the Income Tax Department is handling return processing at the moment.

Recent reports confirm that a backlog of unprocessed returns for the current cycle is causing delays in refunds for everyone across the board. While tax laws allow the department a lot of time to make assessments, without clear deadlines, people often feel anxious. This is especially true since refunds used to arrive in just a few weeks before.

Tax officials & experts point to tighter verification as the main reason for the delay this year. Every return faces deeper checks against Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS) and other financial records.

Even tiny mismatches spark extra scans, dragging refunds into long review periods. The Income Tax Department is now using automated alerts, called "nudges", to help taxpayers in India. These alerts ask taxpayers to review or correct their tax returns if there are any differences found.

While speaking to the media, tax professionals or experts said, "These nudges reduce incorrect refunds and future disputes down the line, but they have slowed down the process of ITR refunds".

The delay has made people more frustrated, especially salaried employees & retirees, as they totally rely on tax refunds for their bills or savings. The delay this year stands out compared to previous years, where people received credits more quickly after verification.

Legal experts highlight that the Income-tax Act might owe interest on late refunds in some scenarios. It depends on why the delay happened and if the taxpayer is also responsible. Still, most people just want straight answers on release dates for the refunds.

These ITR refund delay issues continue to draw attention to tax system efficiency & openness. Authorities insist that these stricter checks are to protect revenue, but taxpayers demand quicker and clearer actions.

Common Reasons for Delayed Tax Refunds:

The following are the reasons why taxpayers are facing these refund delays, currently:

  • AIS & 26AS Mismatches- Small gaps in reported income or deductions are pausing the refund process.
  • Enhanced Risk Checks- New checks highlight expensive transactions or unusual claims.
  • Nudge Compliance- Responding to alerts often resets the review process.
  • Volume Backlog- The busy filing season strains systems, even with automation in place.

What Taxpayers Can Do in This Situation?

Taxpayers can check their refund status on the e-filing portal in the refund section. If it takes more than 30 days, file a complaint on the TIN-NSDL portal. Look for AIS mismatches early to avoid delays. These recent delays in income tax refunds show that we need clearer timelines for the AY 2024-25.
